The city has more residents than Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth combined.
It’s also home to Australia’s biggest city, Canberra.
But with more than 4,000,000 people living in the capital city alone, the number of passports is increasing at a steady rate.
The ABC spoke to local businesses about how to apply for passports and how they are working to keep the number at bay.
How to apply to become an Australian citizen?
Australian citizens have four options to choose from: A new passport is issued for a maximum of two years.
A new identity card is issued if you apply for an existing passport within six months of the date of issue.
A passport is not renewed after three years.
An Australian citizen can apply for a new passport on the day of the application deadline.
What to do if you can’t get a passport?
If you are unable to get a new Australian passport, you can apply online.
Visit the Australian Government website for more information.
If you need to apply in person, visit the Australian Border Force’s website for a passport.
What do I need to know before applying?
If your passport was issued in Australia, you need the following: Your passport number.
You can obtain your passport number from your passport, but you’ll need to provide it to the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).
You need to be able to speak and write English.
You need a photograph of yourself, which can be obtained from your local post office or a government office.
You must be over 18 years of age and have a valid visa.
You’ll need a passport valid for at least five years.
If your fingerprints are not on file, the DIBP can request that you upload them online.
You should also provide your fingerprints, if possible, to the DMBP.
You’re required to apply online or visit the DDBP website.
The DIBM will check your passport and verify your identity.
If the DOBP does not have a passport or ID for you, you’ll be given a referral to a local postoffice.
If it’s too far away to reach a post office, the nearest DIB office can be contacted.
How long do I have to wait to get my passport?
The average wait time for an Australian passport is between eight and 12 months.
However, some Australian passport holders have waited longer than that.
A recent Australian Border Protection study found that of the approximately 1,000 Australian passport applicants who were given letters of approval for a first Australian passport in December 2016, about 70% were given their letters of authorization in less than six months.
If that figure holds true for all of those who applied, the average wait for an American passport is closer to one year.
Australian passports have an expiration date.
